What We're Working On...
Carnival Milwaukee Returns!
We are excited to announce that UEDA's annual fundraiser Carnival Milwaukee will be returning in-person in 2023! This event features food, fun, dancing, celebration and more! We are seeking feedback from past and potential attendees to help us plan the event. Please fill out this 3-question survey & help us make Carnival 2023 amazing!

Our 2022 Emerging Topics in Economic Development Series kicked off earlier this month, featuring the topic Special Purpose Credit Programs. Over 40 individuals joined us to talk about this promising tool that can help bridge homeownership and wealth gaps across America. Our second Emerging Topics session will be held on Thursday, October 20th! BIDs & NIDs: Overview & Outlook will be from 4:30-6:30 PM at Good City Brewing (2108 N Farwell Ave, Milwaukee, WI 53202). Learn about Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and Neighborhood Investment Districts (NIDs), recent trends, hear from local BIDs and NIDs leader about their future plans, and last but not least, network and connect with each other! Register here to join us>>

Bank On Greater Milwaukee celebrated its 3rd anniversary on September 29 with an in-person event that highlighted our accomplishments and recognized our 2022 BOGM Champions.

UEDA & Nonprofit Academy of Wisconsin's Technical Assistance Committee are offering a listening session for nonprofits and those who work in the sector to share their thoughts on how we can help support them with capacity building and resources. UEDA Member Highlights

AARP Wisconsin is hosting "Pedestrian Dignity Experience (Amani Neighborhood)" on October 6th from 10 AM-11:30 AM. Join AARP Wisconsin and Jonathon Stalls, founder of Pedestrian Dignity and author of “WALK: Slow Down, Wake Up, and Connect at 1-3 Miles per Hour”, for a walking and rolling event within the Amani neighborhood. Pedestrian Dignity events center the lived experience of all who walk, use a wheelchair and take transit as their primary form of transportation. Learn more and register here.

Hosted by Data You Can Use, "Data Day" registration is now open! Join them October 19, 2022 for a day-long conference and celebration of data-driven community building, policy, and planning in Milwaukee neighborhoods and beyond. Event & registration information>>

The Community Development Alliance (CDA) is allocating $2 million of the grant to Acts Housing's new acquisition fund. The fund is intended to preserve or create affordable housing by purchasing batches of properties and reselling homes to targeted owner-occupants instead of watching out-of-state investors build local portfolios. They also received a major boost with Wells Fargo awarding a $7.5 million grant. Read about these exciting investments and developments in Urban Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The City of Milwaukee Department of City Development (DCD) recently announced the selected development teams for the Homes MKE initiative, which included Take Root Milwaukee members Milwaukee Community Land Trust, Acts Housing, and Ezekiel Community Development. Read more>> 

The City of Milwaukee, along with Menomonee Valley Partners and the WI Department of Transportation received a $3.25 million Federal grant to prepare a site under the Marquette Interchange for future development. Read more>>

SEWRPC recently released a 27th Street bus rapid transit line plan for Milwaukee County. The plan would build off existing routes and improve transit service and workforce mobility. General elections in Wisconsin take place on November 8th. Check out these resources and share with your networks!

MyVoteWI at www.myvote.wi.gov helps voters find information about election dates, voting locations, what's on the ballot, and more by address search.

Bolder Advocacy, in partnership with The Democracy Capacity Project, just launched a new series, Nonprofit Voter Assistance. These guides work to empower nonprofits to run effective civic engagement, maintain compliance with complex state laws related to advocacy, and more. Wisconsin Disability Vote Coalition has updated their resources in advance of this year's elections. They are a non-partisan effort to help ensure full participation in the electoral process of voters with disabilities. Check out their resources here>> 

The City of Milwaukee is seeking election inspectors and other election workers. In particular, there is a call for individuals fluent in English/Spanish and English/Hmong. Learn more here

Help inform the City of Milwaukee Health Department’s 2023-2028 Community Health Improvement Plan! Join one of four meetings this fall. Meetings will include a brief presentation of the Community Health Assessment, results of the Priority Issue Survey and photo campaign, and small group discussions to prioritize top issues. Nominations for the 2022 Governor’s Financial Literacy Awards are Open! Please consider nominating an individual or organization for this prestigious award. Learn more about these awards and submit a nomination here before December 2, 2022.


Small Business & Nonprofits

The Main Street Bounceback Grants program deadline was extended to 12/31/22! This grant provides $10,000 to new or existing businesses and non-profit organizations moving into vacant properties in Wisconsin’s downtowns and commercial corridors. Funds can be used to pay leases or mortgages, operational expenses and other business costs related to the newly opened location. Be sure to connect with your local Business Improvement District (BID), association, or Chamber of Commerce for guidance on applying for the grant and gather required documents. Reminder that the State Bar of Wisconsin and Marquette Volunteer Legal Clinic has a program offering free legal consultation. Virtual appointments are available weekly and can be set up with an experienced business law attorney at request. Volunteer attorneys have helped small business clients with a variety of issues including employment, real estate, entity formation, contract questions and others. For more information & to request an appointment click here.
