Each month UEDA sends out an electronic bulletin to all current members, which features shorts articles and a list of upcoming events and activities of interest to our members.  It is intended to be a quick and easy way for you to gain insight into the UEDA Community.  The bulletin is also available at our website on the “UEDA News” page.  We hope you find this membership service informative and useful!

 

Upcoming Ueda events…

Join us on Tuesday, August 31st at 5:30PM for the UEDA Annual Meeting.  The Board of Directors and Staff of the Urban Economic Development Association of Wisconsin (UEDA) invite our members and partners to join us at our Annual Meeting, as we celebrate another successful year at UEDA.  This year’s event will feature a special recognition of State Representative Tamara Grigsby, for her tireless and active support of the efforts to resolve the transit crisis facing southeastern Wisconsin.  Join us as we socialize and recognize this “transit champion” and key partners, our out-going Board members, and introduce our new Board members.  Refreshments and light appetizers will be served.  The event will be held at Rustico in the lower level, 223 N. SAVE THE DATE!  The 10th Annual Community Development Summit will be held on the morning of Tuesday, October 12th and will be held at the Italian Conference Center in Milwaukee.  This year’s event, entitled “Foreclosure: Impacts and Opportunities” will feature John Taylor, President and CEO of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition and innovative approaches happening right in our community.  More information to follow!

UEDA Community News    

§         The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC) will present “A Progress Report: How Various Stakeholders are Planning for Implementation of Health Care Reform” on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the Milwaukee Athletic Club.  The panel discussion will focus on the impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) and will include perspectives by providers, the state, employers and insurance companies.  The event will begin at 11:30AM; seating will be limited. §         This article by Milwaukee News Buzz discusses some of the issues involved with landlord and tenant disputes in Wisconsin.  Landlord and tenant disputes continue to be a top source of consumer complaints in Wisconsin, second only to telemarketers. As innumerable apartments change hands in Milwaukee and across Wisconsin this month, many disgruntled renters are learning of the patchwork of government agencies and nonprofits in place to protect their rights.  Read more >>>

§         The annual CHALENG Report (Community Homelessness Assessment, Local Education and Networking Groups) summarizes the results of surveys of both local VA staff and community participants that include local government, service providers, and former and current homeless Veterans. The surveys ask about perceptions of homeless Veterans' needs, the degree of VA/community collaboration, and progress on local homeless Veterans program initiatives.  Also available are individual site profiles for each of the participating VA service sites for easy reference. §         The newest issue of Cityscape: A Journal of Policy Development and Research: (Volume 12, Number 2) examines aging in place models that effectively link older residents of assisted housing to supportive services.  The collected studies focus on the need for rigorous evaluation of models, the expansion of a successful New York City-based model of housing and supportive services to Los Angeles, the aging in place community and informal networks of family caregivers, and more articles on research into this area of housing.  This issue also features refereed research on "Real Estate Brokers’ Duties to Their Clients: Why Some States Mandate Minimum Service Requirements.”  Read more >>>

§         Consumer Action has prepared a Financial Reform Fact Sheet containing a summary of the federal legislation recently signed into law. The fact sheet is available online and as an easy-to-reproduce PDF, which can be accessed at Consumer Action’s website.

§         Basic Economic Development Course Offered Again November 8 - 11, 2010.  This exciting and interactive introductory course is especially beneficial for new professionals entering the field of economic development.  It’s also a great overview for municipal and county staff, elected officials, bankers, village and city administrators, and other individuals involved in economic development.  The course fulfills one of the introductory prerequisites for professional economic developers who wish to pursue the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation through the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).  The course will be held at the high-tech Pyle Center located in Madison, Wisconsin.  Cost: $595 (early rate) through September 15, 2010; $625 after September 15.  Due to high interest, course enrollment has been closed by the early bird registration date in each of the last two years, so early registration is recommended.  To register go to: www.uwex.edu/CES/cced/economies/bedc.cfm

§         How to Engage 20-Somethings in Your Cause…Finding new volunteers and donors is one of the biggest challenges facing nonprofit organizations.  For the past few years, more and more nonprofits have used social media to get people to embrace their causes, but getting the "social-media generation" behind your cause and then inspiring them to contribute in time and resources is another matter.  Read more >>>

§         Executive Directors Leaders Circle begins Tuesday, August 24th, 8:30-10:30AM at the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee.  These coaching and learning experiences are designed for nonprofit leaders to establish a network of peers to confide in and depend on for professional support and growth.  Guided by trained facilitators, the circles provide facilitated discussions, peer coaching, mentoring, resources, and relationships in a confidential and supportive setting.  Participants meet for a total of eight two-hour sessions, held monthly. Past Circle participants report an increase in personal and organizational effectiveness, decreased isolation, renewed self-confidence, and new opportunities to network and collaborate with other nonprofit leaders.  Fee: $290; $200 Nonprofit Center members and CDBG agency attendees.  Call 414-344-3933 to register or for more information.

§         More than 7,000 people responded to Guidestar’s June 2010 economic survey, which measured the impact of these difficult economic times on the nonprofit sector.  Among respondents, nearly half were CEOs, executive directors, or presidents—our leaders in the nonprofit industry.  The results are compelling, as some 40% of participants reported that contributions to their organizations dropped between January 1 and May 31, 2010, compared to the same period a year earlier but about 63% reported a total increase in demand for their organization's services during the same time, compared to the same period a year prior.  Read all of the survey's findings here, for free: "The Effect of the Economy on the Nonprofit Sector."

§         Enhance your Nonprofit Leadership Skills - earn your Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership or Volunteer Impact from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension. You can sign up for a single workshop in either series, or attend all and earn your certificate.  Increase your professional competency and learn what you need to know about various aspects of nonprofit management including the Fundamentals, Strategic Planning, Financial Management & Reporting, Board Development, Fundraising and more.  Classes will be held each month starting September 14 and go through March 8, 2011 and are held in the Chippewa Valley area.  Limited Space Available - register early to reserve your spot! Individual workshops -$99, the Full Certificate series -$570  (must register for all workshops at one time to receive discount).  Visit their website for more information and a full list of classes.

SMALL BUSINESSES / ENTREPRENEURS

§         The Small Business Jobs and Credit Act of 2010 (HR 5297) has stalled in the Senate…This Act would create the Small Business Lending Fund Program which directs the Secretary of the Treasury to make capital investment in eligible institutions in order to increase the availability of credit for small businesses.  It amends the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to provide tax incentives for small business job creation and for other purposes.  If the bill is passed, it would create a $30 billion fund for small business lending to community banks, higher 504 and 7a limits, and refinancing option.  Since the House and Senate are in recess until September 13th and as a result, no further action can be made until the Senate reconvenes.  Read here for more information on the bill.

§         The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education announces their Entrepreneur Training Program, which is offered in Milwaukee, Ozaukee and Washington counties throughout the year.  If you have a business idea and want to develop your concept, attract financing and increase business skills, then this program may be for you.  State grants are available to cover tuition costs as well.  Classes meet once a week for 12 weeks.  Visit www.sce-sbdc.uwm.edu for upcoming dates and locations or call 414-227-3240 for more information.

§         Linked In Workshop:  Use social media to your advantage; this two-part series will help you build a strong foundation for promoting your business.  The first session focuses on starting your networking abilities through Linked In – it can be used by job seekers, career changers, people managing their careers and the self-employed/small business owner. The second session will teach you how to expand your network, the quality of your connections and go through more features.  FEE: $10.00 for each one.  Session 1 held on Tuesday, August 31 and Session 2 will be held on Tuesday, September 14.  Both sessions go from 6:00-9:00PM and will be held at the WWBIC office, located 2745 N. §         Tuesday, September 21: The Milwaukee Mental Health Task Force 2010 Summit - Mental Health: Race, Culture, Ethnicity.  Through keynotes and panel discussions, which will feature the voices and perspectives of mental health consumers and community providers from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, the summit will provide a meaningful opportunity to raise awareness in the community and develop a plan to improve cultural proficiency and address barriers to access in our mental health system.  Held at the Italian Community Center from 8:00AM to 4:00PM.  Visit  www.milwaukeemhtf.org to register online.

§         Thursday, September 30, 2010 for the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee 2010 Fall Conference.  “Stronger Together: The Power of Collaborative Solutions for Building Healthy Communities,” will be a day of learning and interaction focused on building healthy communities through the power of collaborative solutions.  The event will feature a keynote address and hands-on workshops presented by Tom Wolff, author of the groundbreaking new book The Power of Collaborative Solutions - Six Principles and Effective Tools for Building Healthy Communities.  The gathering is for all organizations, large and small.  Everyone's invited - nonprofit, for-profit, government and funding leaders will all have a role to play.  Continental breakfast and lunch are included in the $75 registration fee - $100 day of event.
